After a night in a small room in a B&B in Cork, we headed toward Dublin along the main motorway. On route, we detoured to the Rock of Cashel, a medieval fortified political and religious centre atop a rocky hill in Cashel. It was here that Southern Ireland was ruled in medieval times with a castle and buildings until its purpose was changed to a centre for religion and a cathedral was built. Now, the cathedral is in ruins and the chapel is the only religious building that has been preserved. Approaching Cashel, the Rock is an impressive site towering over the town.
This section of the castle was damaged in a bad storm in the early 1900s. The chunk in the foreground is from its wall. I thought the building had a sad face!
The Rock of Cashel can be seen above the rooftop of village buildings
Queen Elizabeth visited the site in 2011with Prince Philip and signed the ‘visitors book.
