Harry Potter and the Glenfinnan Viaduct

Waking up to heavy fog outside the Alexandra Hotel in Fort William in the Scottish Highlands appeared rather eerie while people were rugged up on their way to work. After a hot Scottish breakfast buffet that included haggis and black pudding, we made our way to Glenfinnan to see its monument and the famed viaduct that was used in Harry Potter movies to film the Hogwarts Express. Most visitors walked the steep climb to the viaduct viewpoint while only some walked across the road to the memorial. The loch also looks very similar to the one used in Harry Potter films.

The Glenfinnan Memorial represents the spot where Bonny Prince Charles declared he would be king of England and Scotland but after the Battle of Culloden that did not happen and he escaped to France from this spot on the loch.

The Glenfinnian Viaduct has been made famous for the Hogwarts Express passing over it in Harry Potter movies. It is actually part of the railway line that is serviced by local trains and also the Jacobite steam train that runs during summer, early autumn and late spring.

In between showers, a rainbow appeared adding a magical aura to the viaduct.

After leaving Fort William and the highlands, we passed through Glencoe, the location used in James Bond’s Skyfall movie. The pass winds through rugged mountains and then opens onto the Rannoch Moors where many battles took place.
